A Summer Camper’s Story

Sep 1, 2013

We recently heard from Todd, a father who had the opportunity to be his son’s counselor at camp. His son, Caleb, has had behavioral and anger management issues in the recent past. Todd was concerned about their time at camp and requested prayer for wisdom for himself and growth for Caleb. After camp, Todd sent the following update regarding Caleb.

“He had such good week at camp. Though the days were tiring…7AM to 11PM in 100 degree heat…Caleb handled the strain well and maintained a great attitude all week long. God moved in his heart. Each day in our worship time, he showed a fervency in worship that I have not seen before. As we stood side by side singing ‘Always’ by Kristian Stanfield together, I had tears of joy in my eyes. This song is based on Psalm 121 saying ‘I lift up my eyes to the mountains. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip – he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.’ You see, earlier this year when we were in our darkest time with Caleb’s struggles, Psalm 121 and this song in particular were my repeated plea to the Lord for help in trouble. What was then a desperate cry for the Lord’s help was this week a cry of thanksgiving sung with my son. Caleb was singing it at the top of his lungs…you can bet that I was too!

At the end of the week, I asked Caleb what God was doing in his life and how he would continue in that. His response was that God had shown him the importance of praise and that he was convicted that he needs to be singing praise at church instead of just waiting to sit down. Sunday morning, he did just that.
